The Thai cabinet has approved a plan on the construction of a special economic zone (SEZ) in its northern border area with Myanmar.
The SEZ aims to develop an economic corridor linking the West and the East of Thailand.
The first phase plans will build the second Thailand-Myanmar Friendship Bridge, an industrial zone and a duty-free and shopping centre.
Myanmar President U Thein Sein and Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra discussed the Dawei SEZ plan in December 2012. The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop the zone in May 2008.-VNA
