Thailand, Myanmar vow to boost military ties

Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha met with visiting Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Commander in Chief of the Myanmar Defence Services, on boosting military ties between the two countries on August 27.

The two officials agreed to establish an emergency hotline for bilateral talks at different levels, Thai government Deputy Spokesman Major General Werachon Sukondhapatipak said in a statement.

The spokesman added that the Thai Prime Minister vowed to support the building of the relationship and trust with the Myanmar army at all levels and pledged to boost economic development along the 2,400-kilometre shared border between the two countries, especially the bilateral special economic zone project Dawei in southern Myanmar.

The two sides also discussed several mutual concerns, including immigration, drug trafficking and the opening of a new commercial zone in the border area.

The Myanmar Senior General is on a three-day visit to Thailand to attend the third high-level meeting between the two nations.-VNA
