Bangkok (VNA) – Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha has affirmed a goal of improving the role of Thailand in digital development in ASEAN at the opening ceremony of the Big Bang 2018 recently held in Bangkok.

According to the PM, digital technology is one of the driving forces to boost economic development, production, trade, services and education. It is also a focus of Thailand’s 20-year national strategy.

As ASEAN Chair next year, Thailand will consider this a chance to promote digital development among regional countries, he said.

According to the ranking of the IMD World Competitiveness Centre (IMD), the digital competitiveness index of Thailand jumped from 41st place in 2017 to 39th in 2018. In Southeast Asia, Singapore ranked first, followed by Malaysia (27th), the Philippines (56th) and Indonesia (62nd). Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam are not named in the ranking.

Recently, Thai media reported that the country’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society is drafting a roadmap on building digital economy and society in line with the orientation of the Thai Government. The roadmap is scheduled to be implemented from 2019.

It aims to support the provision of the Government’s services to the public without administrative papers. The Government will supply the one-stop-shop service in all rural areas across the nation.

At first, the Thai Ministry of Digital Economy and Society will launch the identity card (ID) programme after submitting it to the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) for approval this October.

If passed, the programme will help banks expand the number of accounts via digital lending on the Internet and smart phones.-VNA
