Thailand targets to become ASEAN’s electricity hub

Bangkok (VNA) - Thailand has set a target of becoming an electricityhub in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Thailand is planning to develop its power transmission lines to become theelectricity hub of the region, sourcing hydropower from Laos and selling it toMalaysia, Cambodia and Myanmar, the Thai Energy Ministry’s Permanent SecretaryKulis Sombatsiri said at the 37th Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME) onJune 24.

Kulis said he discussed with ASEAN energy ministers to find ways to guaranteeaffordable electricity to the Southeast Asian region by installing modern transmissionlines, and other alternatives include providing other sources of renewableenergy including solar, wind and biomass power

Themed Advancing Energy Transition through partnership and Innovation, the 37thSOME meeting brought representatives from 10 ASEAN countries as well asinternational organisations, such as international energy agencies andinternational renewable energy agencies, to discuss issues pertaining toelectricity trade in ASEAN.

The ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Energy is being held in Bangkok on June24-28 with an aim to shift ASEAN from fossil fuel to clean power.

Discussions at the meeting will be brought to the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting onEnergy scheduled for September 2-3. - VNA

To this end, Vietnam proposed three strategic priorities for ASEAN cooperation. Vietnam advances qualifications referencing to support labour mobility in ASEAN

On August 21, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in cooperation with the Department of Vocational and Continuing Education under the Ministry of Education and Training, held a national workshop in Hanoi to discuss the implementation of the AQRF and introduce Vietnam's AQRF Referencing Report and post-referencing action plan.

ASEAN Armies' Open Volleyball Tournament 2026 kicks off in Hanoi

Taking place until August 26, the tournament features six teams divided into two groups. Group A comprises the army teams of Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia, while Group B includes Ho Chi Minh City's police team, the Lao People’s Army's team and the Singapore Armed Forces' team.
