Thailand to roll out biometric checks for cyber security

The Thai Government will launch biometric checks nationwide for mobile phone users to prevent fraudulent electronic transactions.

Hanoi (VNA) – The Thai Government will launch biometric checks nationwide for mobile phone users to prevent fraudulent electronic transactions.

According to a plan revealed by the country’s telecoms regulator on November 6, service centres and retailers across Thailand will receive biometric devices while mobile phone users will have to register their SIM cards from December 15. Initially, only post-paid mobile phone users will be required required to register their personal information.

All consumer data will be checked with information stored on their national identification cards and sent to the national database.

Secretary-General of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission of Thailand Takorn Tantasith stressed that the measure is not aimed at tracking users, but to enhance security, especially in e-transactions. It will also ensure security in unstable southern provinces of Thailand, he added.-VNA
