Hanoi (VNA) – General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee and State President To Lam and Mozambican President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi held talks in Hanoi on September 9, discussing concrete orientations and measures to further promote the two countries’ cooperation in the coming time.
Engaging in a private meeting after the welcome ceremony for the Mozambican President, the two leaders agreed to enhance the traditional ties between the CPV and the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) by maintaining theoretical research cooperation, experience exchange, and personnel training, thus serving as the basis for developing the two countries’ relations.
At the following talks, General Secretary and President Lam welcomed President Nyusi and the high-ranking delegation of Mozambique on an official visit to Vietnam from September 8-10. He considered the trip a new impetus for further promoting the traditional solidarity, cooperation, and friendship that have been nurtured by generations of the two countries’ leaders and people.
The Mozambican leader once again offered the deepest condolences from his country’s State and people over the passing of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, who he described as a big friend of the Mozambican people, and also expressed sympathies for the Vietnamese people on the losses caused by typhoon Yagi.
During the event, the two leaders agreed to increase all-level mutual visits between the countries’ parties, parliaments, sectors, and localities to strengthen political trust, thereby creating new momentum for bilateral cooperation.
Vietnam and Mozambique will keep close coordination and mutual support at international and regional forums, including those of which they are members such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the African Union (AU), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), they said.
They applauded the progress in bilateral economic connections. In particular, the telecommunications joint venture Movitel of Vietnam’s Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group in Mozambique is a bright spot. This project has been considerably contributing to economic development and generating numerous benefits for people of both countries.
In terms of trade, the Vietnamese and Mozambican leaders concurred in developing trade in commodities their countries are strong at such as farm produce, apparel, aquatic products, and coal. They also agreed to expand cooperation in the form of joint ventures to such spheres as building cashew nut and aquatic product processing plants in Mozambique.
Highly valuing Vietnam’s achievements in agriculture, President Nyusi called on the Southeast Asian nation to help Mozambique develop agriculture and coordinate to carry out trilateral agricultural projects similar to the ones it has successfully implemented in other African countries.
He spoke highly of Vietnam’s health professionals in terms of not only their medical capacity but also their assistance for Mozambique in improving local health workers’ capacity.
To realise the commitments, both sides agreed to further bring into play bilateral cooperation mechanisms such as the Intergovernmental Committee and the political consultation while stepping up the negotiations and signing of cooperation agreements on digital transformation, education, training, and economy.
With regard to the East Sea issue, the leaders shared the view on the importance of maintaining security, safety, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the waters. They underlined their support for the peaceful settlement of disputes in line with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Concluding the talks, the leaders witnessed the signing of two memoranda of understanding, comprising one on energy and mineral cooperation between the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Mozambican Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, and another on cooperation between the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Mozambican Ministry of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries./.
