Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

– The State President’s decision on the appointment of a Deputy Prosecutor General of the Supreme People’s Procuracy (SPP) was announced at a ceremony held in Hanoi on September 16.

At the ceremony, Party General Secretary and President To Lam presented the decision to Ho Duc Anh, procurator at the SPP and Director of the SPP’s Department of Public Prosecutions and Supervision over the Investigation of Economic Crimes. Read full story

– Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has signed a decision on the organisation of the Steering Committee on formulating the project on building regional and international financial centres.

Under the decision, PM Chinh is the head of the committee, and Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung is the deputy head. Read full story

– A special television programme was held by Vietnam Television (VTV) in the presence of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on September 15 to show support for people in the areas hit by super Typhoon Yagi and its accompanying flooding and landslides.

The event was also attended by Secretary of the Party Central Committee and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Do Van Chien, Minister of National Defence General Phan Van Giang, Minister of Public Security Senior Lieutenant General Luong Tam Quang, and many other officials. – Vietnamese grandmaster Le Quang Liem has risen to the 13th place in the world after his impressive performance at the 2024 Chess Olympiad held in Budapest, Hungary from September 10-23, according to the Live Chess Ratings website.

In this tournament, 33-year-old Liem defeated Mohammad Fahad Rahman of Bangladesh, Makhnev Denis of Kazakhstan and drew against Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan. Read full story

- The Vietnam Electricity (EVN) announced that its units have resumed electricity supply to 98% or more than 5.98 million customers who suffer from power outage due to Typhoon Yagi.

With the urgent and great efforts of units of the EVN’s Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC), 1,626 out of the 1,678 medium-voltage power lines affected by the super storm resumed operation as of September 16 morning. Read full story

– A Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh attended the 6th Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Environment Ministers' Meeting (GMS-EMM-6) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on September 13.

In his opening remarks, Cambodian Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth said the meeting marks a significant step forward in current efforts to ensure a green, clean, and sustainable future for GMS countries, adding that regional cooperation is key to addressing environmental challenges. – Vietnam, joining hands with the international community, has made tireless efforts over the past years to protect the ozone layer, and control and eliminate ozone-depleting substances and greenhouse gases (HFCs), according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE).

The country has completely phased out the consumption of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halon, and carbon tetrachloride (CTC) since January 1, 2010; and HCFC-141b, a substance used in foam production, since January 1, 2015./. Read full story
