Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Party General Secretary and State President To Lam on September 12 (New York time) spoke in a video message sent to the Global Call event in New York ahead of the Summit of the Future, in which he affirmed Vietnam will actively contribute to the Summit and to collective efforts to strengthen peace, cooperation and international solidarity with a view to effectively implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.

Lam was invited to attend the event by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President of Namibia Nangolo Mbumba. Read full story

- Vietnam and Laos issued a joint statement following the state visit to Vietnam by General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith from September 10-13, which was made at an invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart To Lam.

The document said during his stay, Thongloun held talks with Lam. met with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, received representatives from the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee and the Vietnam-Laos Friendship Association, and visited former Vietnamese leaders. He also met former Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts, and students in Laos; paid tribute to late President Ho Chi Minh at his Mausoleum and laid wreaths at the Martyrs’ Monument nearby; and worked with leaders and visited some places in Ho Chi Minh City. - Indonesia's President-elect Prabowo Subianto is set to pay a working visit to Vietnam from September 13 to 14.

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has ordered greater attention to the operation and regulation of the water levels at hydropower reservoirs in northern localities to ensure safety of the dyke systems and minimise damage due to floods in downstream areas.

In a dispatch sent to leaders of the Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development, Industry and Trade, and Son La, Lai Chau, Hoa Binh, Dien Bien, Ha Giang, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Tuyen Quang, Ninh Binh provinces as well as the Vietnam Electricity, the PM noted that Typhoon Yagi, the third storm in the East Sea so far this year, carried torrential rains to the northern region, forcing many hydropower reservoirs in the northern midland and mountainous areas to urgently discharge water to ensure the safety of hydroelectric projects. - US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has extended condolences to the people of Vietnam suffering the devastating consequences of Typhoon Yagi.

In a statement released on September 12 (local time), Blinken noted that the US Agency for International Development (USAID) is providing humanitarian aid to support Vietnam’s efforts to respond to the aftermaths caused by the storm. Read full story

- Member of the Central Military Commission and Deputy Minister of National Defence Sen. Lieut. Gen Hoang Xuan Chien and UK Minister of State for Defence Vernon Coaker co-chaired the fifth Vietnam-UK defence policy dialogue in Hanoi on September 13.

Chien hailed the event as a strategic-level exchange mechanism, noting that defence ties are a vital component of the overall bilateral relationship, strongly backed by leaders from both countries. Read full story

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung proposed six major orientations for future collaboration, including further strengthening political trust through increased delegation exchanges, high-level contacts and bilateral cooperation mechanisms, and promoting more substantive defence and security cooperation through enhanced exchanges and stronger naval and maritime security capabilities.

NA leader urged more substantive, professional deputy affairs work

National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man asked the NA Committee for Deputy Affairs to shift strongly from procedural consultation to strategic consultation, moving beyond the mindset of merely “following procedures correctly” towards policy design, process standardisation, quality control and forecasting.

Vietnam sees Sweden one of leading European partners in innovation, green development

Discussing regional and international issues of mutual concern, both sides affirmed their support for multilateralism and free trade, as well as the peaceful settlement of disputes and conflicts in line with international law and the UN Charter. They also stressed the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, safety, and freedom of navigation and overflight in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
