Tra Su cajeput forest covers over 800 hectares in Tinh Bien District, An Giang Province. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Southwest region, some 20km south of Chau Doc Town.
Tra Su is a typical submerged forest in the western region of the Hau River. The typical landscape in the forest is a deep, eye-catching path created by green melaleuca (cajeput) trees with fresh air and the sound of chirping birds.
Tra Su is quite suitable for tourists who want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life to return to the nature. Here cajeput trees bloom all year around. Visitors can enjoy watching locals harvest cajeput flower honey.
Tra Su forest is home to about 140 plant species, but the majority is cajeput trees. The most suitable time of the year to visit the cajeput forest is during the lotus season, between June and September and the flooding season, from October to November.
During a tour, visitors will travel by motorboat and switch to a rowing boat on reaching the heart of the forest. The forest is also home to some 70 species of birds including storks, bitterns, painted storks, Oriental darters.
Besides seasonal fishes typical in the western region, visitors can enjoy dishes using wild ferns. In normal days, the water level is one metres high, but during the flooding season, the water level is up to three meters.
Thanks to the diversity and richness of flora and fuana, the Tra Su cajeput forest is assessed to be of international significance for the conservation of wetlands in the Mekong Delta.
