Trade unions should participate in diminishing the negative impacts of globalisation, said a Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) official at a seminar on the role of trade unions and challenges presented by the globalisation process held in Hanoi on Aug. 4.

VGCL Vice President Nguyen Hoa Binh said globalisation has been changing the labour environment, employment and working conditions, placing new demands on trade union activities.

According to him, trade unions should join the Government in developing labour markets and perfecting minimum wage policies to ensure equality between economic sectors.

In particular, trade unions should play an important role in negotiating with employers on terms of employment, training and the treatment of workers laid off due to the application of advanced technology.

At the seminar, participants underlined the need to define the roles of the State, market, labourers and employers as the country is shifting into a market economy, facing new problems in terms of labour relations./.
