Traffic accidents rose sharply during the week-long Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday, killing 203 people and injuring 417 others in 368 incidents.

Hanoi (VNA) – Traffic accidents rosesharply during the week-long Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday, killing 203 peopleand injuring 417 others in 368 incidents.

Road accidents accounted for 97.8 percent (360)of the total incidents, 97 percent (197) of the deaths, and 97.36 percent (406)of the injured during the holiday from January 26 to February 1.

There were eight railway accidents, killing sixand injuring 11 people.

Traffic accidents peaked on January 30 (thethird day of the Lunar New Year), with 60 incidents in which 38 people were killedand 69 others wounded.

Only six provinces were free of trafficaccidents during the holiday, namely Bac Ninh, Cao Bang, Kon Tum, Ninh Binh,Son La and Lao Cai.

Traffic accidents respectively rose 29.5percent, 11.5 percent and 48 percent in the numbers of incidents, deaths andinjured people during Tet, according to the Traffic Police Department.

Sen. Lt. Col. Nguyen Quang Nhat, head of thedepartment’s communication division, blamed the surge on people driving overthe speed limit, not wearing helmets while riding motorbikes and drink-driving.

He admitted that forces’ lax examination andpunishment of traffic violations, especially in rural areas, was another causeof the rise in accidents.-VNA

Binh Thuan ramps up measures to combat IUU fishing

According to the Binh Thuan Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province has completed registration for all “three-no” fishing boats - vessels without registration, licences or monitoring systems - measuring six metres or more. About 2,710 such vessels have been registered, meeting 100% of the ministry’s requirements and 2,012 operational vessels have been fitted with VMS devices.

Vietnam, US hold 169th repatriation ceremony for American MIA servicemen

At the ceremony, Vietnam handed over four boxes containing remains recovered during recent joint excavations in Hue city, and Quang Tri and Kon Tum provinces. Preliminary forensic analysis on April 15 suggested the remains may belong to US MIAs and they will be sent to Hawaii for further identification.

Second government legislation meeting reviews draft bills
