Traffic accidents up, deaths drop in eight months

There were 16,043 traffic accidents nationwide from December 15, 2023 to August 14, 2023, killing 7,077 people and injuring 12,248 others, reported the Office of the National Traffic Safety Committee on August 27.

Hanoi (VNA) - There were 16,043 traffic accidents nationwide from December 15, 2023 to August 14, 2023, killing 7,077 people and injuring 12,248 others, reported the Office of the National Traffic Safety Committee on August 27.

The numbers of accidents increased by 1,847, or 13.01%, and injuries rose by 2,764 or 29.14% but deaths decreased by 836 or 10.56%, compared to the same period last year, the office said.

Among the accidents, 15,905 happened on roads with 6,987 deaths and 12,219 injured victims. Meanwhile, 68 people were killed and 23 injured in 97 railway accidents.

Thirty-six accidents on waterways claimed the lives of 21 people and injured six others, while there were five maritime accidents resulting in one death.

From July 15 to August 14, there were 1,801 traffic accidents that killed 873 people and injured 1,172 others./.

Tien Giang steps up efforts to eliminate substandard houses

According to the Tien Giang People’s Committee, 485 homes for policy beneficiaries, families of war martyrs, and low-income households will be supported. Of these, 284 new homes will be built, and 201 existing ones repaired, with a total budget of 24.1 billion VND (about 984,000 USD). As of March 6, construction had started on 166 houses, with 32 already completed.

Bac Giang to eliminate substandard houses by November

Local authorities have identified 795 homes of poor and near-poor households and individuals with recognised service to the nation that qualify for support. Of these, 475 require complete reconstruction and 320 need significant repairs, with estimated costs totaling 39 billion VND (1.53 million USD).

They also consented to promote the development of a cross-border economic cooperation zone through sectoral cooperation at Hai Yen industrial park, Van Ninh international port in Mong Cai; a cross-border e-commerce industrial park; and transport connectivity projects between the two cities including the international railway line from Mong Cai to Dongxing, Bac Luan III bridge, and an auxiliary rough steel bridge.
