Voters on islands of Truong Sa (Spratly) district of the central province of Khanh Hoa on May 15 morning cast their ballots to elect deputies to the 13 th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2011-2016 term.

Due to its far distance from the mainland, Truong Sa district was allowed to hold the elections a week earlier than the day of elections nationwide.

On such islands as Song Tu Tay, Da Thi, Son Ca, Da Nam, Sinh Ton, Nam Yet, Sinh Ton Dong, Co Lin, Da Lon, Len Dao, Truong Sa Lon, Truong Sa Dong, Phan Vinh, An Bang, Thuyen Chai, Da Tay, Da Lat, Tien Nu, Nui Le, Toc Tan and Da Dong, residents were prioritised casting their ballots before officers and soldiers of military units stationed on these islands.

Major Nguyen Van Tho, head of Sinh Ton Dong island of Sinh Ton commune said although a rainstorm landed the island a day earlier, it was sunny on the voting day to cheer up the elections which have been prepared for nearly a month.

For citizens in the far-off district’s Truong Sa town, elections were viewed as a sacred occasion.

Luong Thi Tinh, a local resident, shared her feelings: “Over the past few days, I scanned the list of candidates carefully and attended their meetings with voters. I will give my ballots to those who have sufficient virtue, capacity, enthusiasm and responsibility to represent the people and nation.”

Closely following the elections on the islands, President of the Truong Sa district Fatherland Front Committee Nguyen Van Thang affirmed that during the elections of deputies to the 13 th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels, we learnt what local people on Truong Sa want.

He noted that deputies of the district People’s Council would perform competently their function of supervising, prompting and examining projects which have been and would be carried out on the islands with the aim of making the district wealthier and stronger.

Also on May 15, more than 8,000 voters in Ka Lang, Mu Ca, Muong Mo and Ta Tong communes in Muong Te district of the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau also balloted for deputies to the 13 th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2011-2016 tenure./.
