The People's Court of the southern province of Tay Ninh on April 3 sentenced two Chinese nationals to a total of 11 years in prison for illegal transportation of money across the border.
Accordingly, Liu Wei, 28, was given six years in prison while Tan Zheng got five years.
On August 29 last year, local police forces, together with customs officials and border guards, stopped Tan Zheng’s car at the Xa Mat border gate in Tay Ninh’s Tan Bien district. The police found two suitcases and a box containing 18.2 billion VND (860,000 USD) in cash in the car.
Tan Zheng claimed he had been hired by Liu Wei, General Director of Tien Phuong Ltd. Co., to smuggle the money across the border, and that Wei was waiting for the money on the Cambodian side.
When Zheng failed to show up, Wei came to the border gate to return to Vietnam, where he was arrested by the police.-VNA
