Typhoon Kalmaegi entered the East Sea in the early morning of September 15, packing winds of 118-133km per hour, reported the Central Meteorology Hydrology Forecast Centre.
As of 4 a.m. of September 15, the storm, the third in the East Sea so far this year, was about 760km east-northeast from Vietnam’s Hoang Sa archipelago.
In the next 24-48 hours, Kalmaegi is forecast to move to the west-northwestern direction with a speed of about 25-30km per hour.
According to the centre, the typhoon is predicted to reach the northeastern Vietnam at about 4a.m. of September 17, with sustained winds of 89-117km per hour. It will then move west-northwestwards at a speed of 25km per hour.
As Kalmaegi is forecast to have complicated developments and bring in intense rains, the Central Steering Committee on Flood and Storm Prevention on September 14 sent an urgent dispatch to coastal localities from Quang Ninh to Khanh Hoa, as well as ministries and media agencies asking them to take response measures.
The committee asked for close supervision of the storm movements and plans to evacuate locals in dangerous areas to safer places.
Ministries and localities were also urged to warn all offshore vessels of the typhoon, while standing ready for rescue and search works.
The committee has also coordinated with border guard commands in provinces from Quang Ninh to Binh Thuan to call back 70,809 fishing vessels manned by 298,574 people onshore.
On September 14, Kalmaegi slammed into the northeastern Philippines, with sustained winds of 130 km per hour, causing cancellation of many flights. There was no report of casualties yet.-VNA
