A workshop was opened in Hanoi on November 4 to give consultations on a UK-funded project to help develop a greenhouse gas inventory (GHGI) and monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system in Vietnam.
The three-day event, the first in a series of three workshops to support the Vietnamese Government’s climate change strategy, is co-organised by the Prosperity Fund of the British Embassy in Vietnam and the Department of Meteorology, Hydrology and Climate Change (DMHCC) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
Addressing the workshop, DMHCC Deputy Director Nguyen Khac Hieu emphasised the need for Vietnam to build its national GHGI system.
The seminar offers a chance for Vietnamese meteorologists and hydrologists to learn from international experience, thus making suitable recommendations for the Government, he said.
Dr. Rose Bailey, a representative from global sustainability consultancy Ricardo-AEA, said his organisation is ready to help train Vietnamese officials in the field, adding that a delegation from DMHCC visited the UK to study greenhouse gas inventory experience.
According to Dr. Nguyen Phuong Nam, a climate change expert, Vietnam is carrying out greenhouse gas inventory based on Ricardo-AEA expertise.
“We want to receive more support from Ricardo-AEA in improving the capacity of officials in charge,” Nam said.
At the workshop, participants also heard a report on the greenhouse gas inventory results in Vietnam so far as well as opportunities and challenges facing the process.-VNA
