The United Nations relevant agencies such as the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and the Department of Field Support (DFS) are hoped to assist Vietnam with conducting peacekeeping activities and enhancing the capacity of the Vietnam Peacekeeping Centre moving forward.

During the meeting between Vietnamese Defence Minister General Phung Quang Thanh and UN Under-Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Herve Ladsous in Hanoi on June 10, the two sides discussed cooperation orientations such as increasing the participation of Vietnamese officers in UN peacekeeping missions and opening short-and long-term training courses in the field.

Under-Secretary General Herve Ladsous said his ongoing visit to Vietnam is designed to share experience and increase UN assistance to Vietnam in preparation for peacekeeping activities.

Minister Thanh underlined the significance of the visit which took place in the context of Vietnam ’s strong commitment to actively join UN peacekeeping missions and global efforts to build a world of peace and prosperity.

He thanked the UN for its support to Vietnam since the country joined UN peacekeeping missions last year, saying the two sides have sent delegations to exchange issues relating to preparations for and implementation of peacekeeping activities.

Vietnam in particular has seen positive outcomes in legal procedures, training, logistics and technical work, external affairs, international cooperation and building capacity for the Vietnam Peacekeeping Centre, he said.-VNA
