UN values VN’s determination in implementing MDGs

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon spoke highly of Vietnam ’s determination in the implementation of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a senior Vietnamese diplomat has said.

Responding reporters’ queries relating to the UN Summit on the MDGs, Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh said the UN Chief also valued Vietnam ’s contributions in renovating the organisation’s activity, including the pilot implementation of the “One UN” Initiative.

The Vietnamese delegation at the summit, headed by President Nguyen Minh Triet showed Vietnam ’s commitments to the implementation of the MDGs, Minh said.

In his presentations at the meeting, President Triet shared Vietnam’s experience as the country is recognised as one of the leaders in implementing MDGs. He also proposed that the international community focus on maintaining peace and stability and creating more favourable conditions for developing countries and drawing up plans for the next five years at national and international levels.

Vietnam made contributions to the meeting’s final document by adding proposals on ensuring peace, using water sources in a fair and sustainable way and expanding cooperation between developing countries, Minh added.

The deputy FM further said that countries and international organisations at the meeting all agreed that the implementation of MDGs have made progresses and affirmed their strong commitment to MDGs.

The summit approved an action plan to fulfil MDGs, citing suitable policies, cooperation and support from international community, and specific measures for every target as decisive factors to attain these goals.

Relating to the second ASEAN-US Leaders’ Summit , Assistant to Foreign Minister Pham Quang Vinh said during their discussions, ASEAN and the US leaders reached high consensus on boosting comprehensive and mutual benefit cooperation, lifting ASEAN-US relations to a new height. The US pledged further cooperation with Mekong sub-region countries, he added.

Vinh further said that the leaders ratified a joint statement, putting forth measures to strengthen comprehensive cooperation and decided to set up a group of famous figures to propose ideas for boosting bilateral ties.

ASEAN and US leaders agreed to organise the third meeting in 2011 on the occasion of the East Asia Summit, he said./.
