UNDP helps Vietnam build 2011-2020 socio-economic strategy

The results of these studies were presented to attendees of a conferencejointly held by the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the UnitedNations Development Programme (UNDP) in Hanoi on March 31.

As part of the UNDP-funded project on “assistance to the making of thesocio-economic development strategy for the 2011-2020 period”, thestudies analysed economic development trends around the world and in theregion together with their possible impact on the Vietnamese economy inthe next decade.

The studies have provided insight into the competitiveness of State andprivate companies as well as international experiences in sharpening thecompetitiveness of businesses.

They also focussed on ways to boost farming productivity and incomes forrural people, along with forecasts on the labour market, employment andurbanisation in Vietnam by 2020.

Addressing the conference, UNDP Resident Representative John Hendraaffirmed that the UNDP is willing to discuss and share with Vietnam theviews and experiences it has gained to assist the country in making itssocio-economic development strategy.

He spoke highly of Vietnam ’s openness and sharing during the course ofbuilding its 2011-2020 socio-economic development strategy, describingit as an important document, which will enable donors and internationalorganisations to define priorities in Vietnam ’s policies in the nextten years for later use in their national cooperation programmes withVietnam .

Between 1991-2010, from an agriculture-based economy, Vietnam hasrisen to attain growth in a wide range of fields and has also integratedbroadly in the regional and world economies, the UNDP official said,urging the country to make wise choices in shaping its future in thecoming period in the context of new economic and social challenges.

Improving the quality of investment, the effectiveness and skills of thelabour force, and creating a stable environment for businesses todevelop are extremely important for Vietnam in its next phase ofdevelopment, the UNDP official said.

The conference, the first of its kind, brought together representativesfrom relevant ministries and sectors, international organisations, andforeign embassies, as well as experts on development./.

Quang Ngai to remove hundreds of unregistered fishing vessels

To date, Quang Ngai has 5,194 registered fishing vessels, with data regularly updated in the National Fisheries Database (VNFishbase). The provincial licensing rate for fishing activities has reached 81.94%, while 99% of local vessels required to install vessel monitoring systems (VMS) have complied.

A total of 351 communes free of temporary, dilapidated houses

From February 21-28, 7,540 temporary and dilapidated houses were renovated or replaced nationwide, bringing the total number of facilities improved under humanitarian policy to 115,481. Of these, 62,737 houses were inaugurated, while construction began on another 52,744.
