Hanoi (VNA) – US President Donald Trump convened a press conference at Marriot hotel in Hanoi on February following his meeting with leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong-un.
Trump thanked the Vietnamese Government and people for supporting his second summit with DPRK leader Kim, the DPRK-USA Hanoi Summit.
He said he and the DPRK leader discussed a number of issues, but it is not the right time to sign a joint statement, adding that he had an effective time with Chairman Kim.
According to him, the obstacle in negotiations lies in sanctions. The DPRK wants full removal of the sanctions but the US is yet to be able to meet such a demand.
However, he also affirmed the US is still interested in maintaining ties with the DPRK.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, for his part, said the talks progressed in the past 24-36 hours.
He added that the two sides’ working groups will meet in next weeks, and expressed his optimism that further progress will be made.
Earlier, the two leaders unexpectedly concluded negotiations earlier than schedule.-VNA
