Jakarta (VNA) – Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Vu Van Tam led a Vietnamese delegation to the Southeast Asia and Pacific Regional Fisheries Summit held in Jakarta, Indonesia on July 28.

The summit brought together government officials, industry insiders, representatives of financial organisations and scientists to discuss fisheries reform and the industry’s sustainable development.

Participants agreed that fisheries reform can promote the sector’s achievements in Southeast Asia and the Pacific as well as its sustainable growth.

They said aside from efforts to fight illegal fishing, governments need close management to steer clear of overexploitation or destructive fishing methods to prevent damage to marine ecosystems.

At the summit, officials also mulled over the tracing of seafood origin and the prevention of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

Indonesian Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti told Vietnam News Agency that her country calls for foreign investment in technologies and techniques serving seafood processing and export, but it allows only domestic businesses to conduct fishing activities.

She added that on July 27, Indonesia and Vietnam inked a memorandum of understanding on cooperation enhancement and the control, prevention and settlement of sea-related issues.

The summit’s outcomes will be reported at the World Ocean Summit, which will be held in Bali, Indonesia in February 2017.-VNA
