Vietnam will further cooperate with the Mekong River Commission (MRC)’s member countries in promoting MRC’s research on sustainable development and management of water resource in the Mekong River.
Le Duc Trung, Office Chief of Vietnam National Mekong Committee made the affirmation in a conference held in Hanoi on July 12 to review Vietnam ’s efforts in cooperating with its Mekong partners in the field.
He said that Vietnam will also strengthen cooperation with strategic and dialogue partners while actively participating in international and regional cooperation initiatives such as the Mekong-Japan and Mekong-US cooperation, the Greater Mekong Subregion and the Asia-Europe Meeting.
In the period of 2012-2013, the cooperation in the Mekong region has been strengthened and developed, with many important events on the theme of water organised in Vietnam and MRC member countries.
Vietnam hosted the ASE M workshop on water and river basin in March and the 4 th working group meeting of the Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI) in April this year. In May, the second Asia-Pacific Water Summit took place in Thailand . At these events, leaders of regional countries voiced their commitment to strengthening cooperation on sustainable management and development of water resources, particularly trans-national resources.
However, the Mekong cooperation is also facing many challenges, especially the potential negative impacts on environment in the region by the rapid increase in water use in the basin.
Trung said that the Vietnam committee will assist relevant ministries, sectors and localities in participating in MRC’s cooperation activities.-VNA
