Vietnam calls for solution to humanitarian crisis in Syria

New York (VNA) – Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of Vietnam’sPermanent Mission to the United Nations, has called on all parties to find along-term solution to the situation in Syria on the basis of international lawand UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.

Speaking at a UNSC meeting on thehumanitarian issue in Syria on February 27, Ambassador Quy expressed concern over civilianlosses in northwestern Syria as well as the humanitarian situation in other partsof the country.

He also emphasised that all parties mustcomply with their obligations under international humanitarian law, includingensuring that civilians are protected and that aid is delivered on a prioritybasis.

At the meeting, both Ursula Mueller,Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, and Henrietta Fore, ExecutiveDirector of UNICEF, also shared their concerns about the humanitarian crisis innorthwestern Syria, especially since early December 2019, when the governmentincreased raids on terrorists in Idlib, and military tensions between Syria andTurkey escalated.

Mueller cited the latest data as sayingthat fighting in northwestern Syria has forced around 900,000 people, including500,000 children, to leave their homes since December 2019. 

Reiterating the UN Secretary-General’srecent statement that international humanitarian law and the protection ofcivilians have been systematically ignored, she warned that fighting isadvancing into areas with high concentrations of people.

Participants urgedrelevant parties to exercise restraint and maintain dialogue to seek a ceasefireagreement./.
