Phnom Penh (VNA) – Vietnam and Cambodia have agreed to continue their mutual support and close collaboration in order to strengthen the “good neighbourliness, traditional friendship and comprehensive, sustainable and long-term cooperation” between the two countries, thus bringing pragmatic interests to their people.

The consensus came during a meeting between President Tran Dai Quang and Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni in Phnom Penh on June 15 as part of the Vietnamese leader’s two-day State visit to Cambodia.

The guest congratulated Cambodian people on the achievements they have recorded over the recent past and highly appreciated the King’s role in national reconciliation and development.

Vietnam always treasures the good sentiments and valuable support of King Norodom Sihamoni, late King Norodom Sihanouk and the Cambodian people towards Vietnam during its past struggle for national independence and the present cause of national construction and development, he said.

President Tran Dai Quang noted his hope that King Norodom Sihamoni will continue his assistance to help Vietnamese in Cambodia stabilise their lives and make more contributions to the development of the host country as well as to bilateral ties.

Vietnam always wishes to work together with Cambodia to consolidate and further develop the fruitful friendship and cooperation between the two countries, for the sake of the two countries’ people and for peace, stability and development in the region and the world at large, he said, showing his belief that the King will continue to nurture the relationship.

The two sides consented to join hands with each other to organise activities marking the 50 th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties (June 24, 1967).

They will also pay more heed to educating young people about the solidarity and traditional friendship between the nations, while increasing the exchange of all-level delegations, especially between their border localities and citizens.

President Tran Dai Quang invited King Norodom Sihamoni and Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk to visit Vietnam at a suitable time. The King accepted the invitation with pleasure.

The host described the Vietnamese President’s visit as a milestone aiming to deepen the friendship and comprehensive cooperation in a more stable and sustainable fashion.

He thanked the Vietnamese Party, State, Government and people for their great support to Cambodia, especially their contributions to national reconciliation in the country.

Cambodia will continue to forge the solidarity, friendship and affiliation between the two countries, he said, voicing his hope that Vietnam will provide more support for Cambodian development.-VNA
