Vietnam, Canada eye stronger comprehensive partnership

Ottawa (VNA) – With the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions eased,the granting of visas should be made more convenient and quick to boostcultural and people-to-people exchanges and enhance friendship between Vietnamand Canada, Ambassador to the country Pham Cao Phong told an event onOctober 3.

Delivering a speech at aceremony hosted by the Vietnamese Embassy in Ottawa to markthe fifth anniversary of the Vietnam – Canada Comprehensive Partnership, the diplomat further said official visits, online and offline meetings, and phone talksbetween the two governments’ leaders and minsters have provided a strongfoundation for the two countries to further expand bilateral ties and reinforcecommon priorities.

He said the Vietnam – Canada economic linkage, as a driverof the Comprehensive Partnership, should be further stepped up by making themost of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for the Trans-PacificProgress (CPTPP).

The diplomat urged the two sides to push for a sustainableand reliable supply chain and advance cooperation in science, technology,innovation, green energy, climate change and environment, saying these areaswill help the two nations sustain economic security.

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, for her part, saidCanada wishes to forge a long-term relation with Vietnam, and that the SoutheastAsian country plays a critical role in Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, giventhat they boast a close people-to-people exchange and both are members of theFrancophone community.

Canada looks forward to Vietnam’s support to become an ASEANstrategic partner, she noted, adding that last year, ASEAN was Canada’s fourthlargest trade partner with bilateral goods exchange reaching 25 billion USD.

Vietnam and Canada established a Comprehensive Partnershipin 2017 during an official visit of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to Vietnam.Since then, the two-way trade has surged by 72.7% and the number of Vietnamesestudents in Canada has been on a rise.

Canada has invested 1.2 billion CAD (0.8 billion USD) in 101projects in Vietnam within their development cooperation.

The two countries will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations next year./.

Vietnam, Senegal enhance cooperation across key sectors

In the first four months of 2025, Vietnam’s exports to Senegal stood at 43.43 million USD, nearly equalling the total for 2024 (43.91 million USD).
