A workshop promoting solar energy technology transfer between Ho Chi Minh City and China’s Guangxi province was held in the city on April 18.

Jointly organised by the municipal Centre for Science and Technology Information and the China-ASEAN Technology Transfer Centre, the event offered a good chance to Vietnamese enterprises to get updated on new technologies in this field and seek cooperation opportunities with Chinese partners.

Participants focused their discussion on the trend of solar energy development in both nations as well as the models of cooperation and technology transfer, between the two sides in the field in recent time.

Vietnam’s policy in developing solar energy was also introduced at the event. Under the country’s national energy development strategy to 2020 and a vision to 2050, renewable energy will account for 5 percent of total electricity output by 2020 and 11 percent 30 years later. Meanwhile, Chinese guests shared their country’s experience in popularising solar energy and present their solar cell production technologies.

According to Phan Minh Tan, Director of the city’s Department of Science and Technology, the municipal authorities has been making every effort to promote the sector through incentives for investment in researching and developing new and renewable energy sources. However, the high cost is hindering the sector’s development in Vietnam, he said.-VNA
