Vietnam congratulates new IPU President

National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong on October 16 congratulated Bangladeshi parliamentarian Saber Chowdhury on his election as President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Saber Chowdhury won the majority of votes in a secret ballot held on the last day of the 131st Assembly of the IPU in Switzerland, defeating three other candidates to become the 28th IPU president.

Earlier, the Vietnamese official held a meeting with Speaker of the Bangladeshi Parliament S.S Chaudhury, who valued Vietnam’s active role at the IPU, helping to increase the country’s standing in the global arena.

Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong, head of the Vietnamese delegation to IPU-131, highlighted the flourishing ties between Vietnam and Bangladesh, and spoke highly of Chaudhury’s efforts as a candidate for the IPU presidential role.-VNA
