Vietnam holds a special position in the US’s Indo-Pacific strategy, affirmed Marie C. Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam holds a special position inthe US’s Indo-Pacific strategy, affirmed Marie C. Damour, outgoing US ConsultGeneral to Ho Chi Minh City, as she came to bid farewell to Phan Van Mai, Standing Deputy Secretary of the municipal Party Committee and Chairman of themunicipal People’s Committee, on July 26.

At the reception, Mai lauded the role of the ConsulateGeneral regarding its coordination with US representative agencies and openingup myriad trade and investment opportunities for US firms in the southernmetropolis.

Mentioning his recent visit to the US, he said the sides have tremendous collaborationpotential in digital transformation, smart city building, renewable energy,urban management, infrastructure construction, education and health.

HCM City wants to learn from Los Angeles’ smart city modeland calls on big US companies to invest in the city, the official noted.

For her part, Damour said US firms hope to join morecooperation projects with the Vietnamese southern economic hub.

She informed her host that the US peace corps will come tothe city next year for joint activities in English language education andpeople-to-people exchange promotion.

The diplomat was then presented with the HCM City medal for hercontributions over the past tenure./.

Hanoi University of Pharmacy holds special significance in bilateral relations as it is closely associated with Alexandre Yersin, a French scientist of Swiss origin born in 1863 in the canton of Vaud, the homeland of President Parmelin. Yersin was the first principal of the Indochina Medical College, the predecessor of today’s Hanoi University of Pharmacy and Hanoi Medical University. He also made important contributions to the development of medicine in Vietnam.

Liechtenstein Prime Minister arrives in Hanoi, starting official visit to Vietnam

The visit comes at a favourable time, following the conclusion of negotiations on a free trade agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) in July 2026. The agreement is expected to provide an important framework for further expanding Vietnam’s economic ties with Liechtenstein and other EFTA members, facilitating trade, investment and business connections.

Over the past 55 years since establishing diplomatic relations, Vietnam and Switzerland have become reliable and effective partners across various fields. Political trust has continued to be strengthened through visits and high-level meetings. In January 2025, the two countries established a Comprehensive Partnership, marking a new milestone in the bilateral relations. Since then, their cooperation has continued to deepen and become more effective.

16th National Assembly commences second session

The parliament’s second session is scheduled to last until November 21. It is divided into two phases, with the first from October 17 to November 14, and the second from November 20 to 21.
