Parliament leaders of Vietnam and India vowed on Feb. 24 to step up cooperation to realise agreements in politics, economics and culture.
The spirit for cooperation was highlighted at the talks held on the same day between Meira Kumar, Speaker of the Lok Sabha – the Lower House of the Indian Parliament, and Vietnam ’s National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong.
At the meeting, Speaker Meira Kumar said Vietnam has an important standing in India ’s foreign policy. She expressed the hope that Vietnam would support India in boosting relations with ASEAN countries.

Cooperation between the two countries have been constantly promoted in all areas, with two-way trade having already surpassed the joint target of two billion USD set for 2010.
Speaker Meira Kumar and her visiting counterpart agreed on the need to further promote bilateral cooperation relations in economics, trade and investment and areas such as information technology and oil and gas. She pledged favourable conditions for Indian firms wishing to do business with Vietnamese partners.
On his side, Chairman Trong said Vietnam would support India ’s running for a permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council after it is expanded.
As chairman of the ASEAN and the ASEAN Inter-parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), Vietnam is willing to help India develop closer relations with ASEAN members and its legislative body, he said.
Chairman Trong thanked India for its support at regional and international forums as well as for its recognition of Vietnam ’s full market economy. He proposed that the two congresses increase the exchange of visits and share experiences in law-making and oversight works.
On the same day, Chairman Trong met with Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari, who is also the chairman of the Upper House of the Indian Parliament.
Chairman Hamid Ansari said much remained to be done to speed up the two parliaments’ relationship. He agreed with Chairman Trong’s proposal to increase exchanges and cooperation between the Vietnamese NA and the Upper House of the Indian Parliament, either bilaterally or through international inter-parliamentary forums.
