Vietnam, Indonesia agree to advance defence ties

Hanoi (VNA) – Ministerof National Defence Gen. Phan Van Giang and his visiting Indonesian counterpartPrabowo Subianto agreed to intensifybilateral defence relations in the time ahead in their talks in Hanoi on March 13.

Subianto, who is on anofficial visit from May 12 to 14, said his country always attaches importanceto the relations with Vietnam.

The two sides shared the viewthat defence cooperation between Vietnam and Indonesia has been promoted andrecorded encouraging outcomes as seen in their effective dialogues,consultations, delegation exchanges, personnel training, cooperation betweenthe naval and coast guard forces, partnership between research institutes, andcoordination at multilateral forums.

In particular, despite theCOVID-19 pandemic’s impacts since late 2019, bilateral defence ties have stillbeen enhanced and obtained certain practical outcomes, especially dialogue andcooperation mechanisms maintained via videoconference, along with cooperation dealssigned between the countries’ naval and coast guard forces.

They agreed that in the timeahead, Vietnam and Indonesia will press on with effectively implementing thedefence cooperation agreements inked between their Governments and defenceministries, bring into play dialogue mechanisms, step up mutual visits at alllevels, reinforce relations between their naval and coast guard forces, andboost collaboration in training and the defence industry.

The ministers affirmed thenecessity to maintain peace, stability, security, and safety of navigation andoverflight in the East Sea, comply with international law, including the 1982UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), effectively carry out theDeclaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and soon finalisea substantive and effective code of conduct (COC) in the waters that is in linewith international law.

At the talks, Giang asked thetwo countries’ maritime law enforcement agencies to increase coordination toshare information and deal with issues emerging at sea in conformity with theVietnam - Indonesia strategic partnership and the humanitarian spirit towardsfishermen.

He also took this occasion toinvite leaders of the Indonesian ministry to attend and send the country’sdefence businesses to take part in the first international defence exhibitionin Vietnam in December this year./.

NA Standing Committee inspects election preparations in Ca Mau

In Ca Mau, 13 candidates have been introduced for the National Assembly, 73 for the provincial People’s Council, and 1,469 for commune-level People’s Councils. The provincial election committee has designated five NA constituencies and 18 constituencies for People’s Councils at provincial and commune levels.
