For Vietnam, the treaty opens favourable avenues to expand international partnerships, access cutting-edge knowledge, data, and technologies, and build stronger domestic capabilities in marine science, ocean governance, and environmental protection. It also presents Vietnamese researchers with meaningful opportunities to join global research activities and benefit from marine genetic resources in international waters and the deep seabed, ultimately supporting the emergence of a modern, innovation-led ocean economy, said Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu.

Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, has highlighted Vietnam’s substantive contributions to the global ocean agenda and its efforts to advance the implementation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) worldwide.

As an active, proactive, and responsible member of the international community, Vietnam is always ready to work with regional countries and the international community to strengthen cooperation and share experience in combating illegal fishing, promoting effective and sustainable fisheries management in line with international law.

The event also featured two special sessions — an ambassadors’ lounge and a session on youth power — offering diverse perspectives on regional developments and exploring innovative ideas to safeguard peace and maintain a rules-based order in the East Sea.

PM Pham Minh Chinh called on the East Asia Summit (EAS) to lead in upholding international law and multilateralism, and advancing an open, inclusive, transparent, and rules-based regional order, with ASEAN at its core.

The border is not only the endpoint of one country but also the starting point of another country, serving as a bridge for cooperation and development between nations. Vietnam has stood out as a model for effectively resolving border and territorial matters in recent times.

Ambassador Pham Hai Anh, Director-General of the Department of International Organisations under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, called on NAM to strengthen unity, innovate operational methods, and enhance effectiveness, while promoting South-South cooperation.

Vietnam reaffirmed its consistent policy of resolutely and persistently safeguarding its sovereignty and legitimate maritime interests, while actively promoting peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

On the East Sea issue, Vietnam maintains a consistent stance that all maritime disputes must be solved by peaceful measures, based on international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Vice Admiral Tran Thanh Nghiem, Commander of the Vietnam People’s Navy, has stressed Vietnam’s strong commitment to regional cooperation when he attended the 19th ASEAN Navy Chiefs’ Meeting (ANCM-19) that opened on August 19 in Penang, Malaysia.

Jointly organised by the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam and China’s National Institute for South China Sea Studies, the event served as a Track 2 dialogue between two leading academic institutions on the East Sea. It aimed to explore innovative ideas for building trust and promoting bilateral collaboration.

The All People's Security Safeguard Festival in Tuyen Quang province, the consolidation of the national steering committee for the implementation of Vietnam’s commitments at COP26, and the banking sector's completion of a comprehensive review of all customer records are among news highlights on August 14.

As a coastal nation with strategic and economic interests closely tied to peace and security in the East Sea, Vietnam affirmed its consistent position of resolving all disputes via peaceful means in accordance with international laws, including the UNCLOS.

Vietnam has also played a key role in upholding a rules-based order in the East Sea by steadfastly promoting the peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as well as by pushing for the finalisation of a Code of Conduct (COC).

The Foreign Ministry spokeperson was responding to a reporter's question regarding July 12, 2025, which marked the 9th anniversary of the ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in the East Sea arbitration case between the Philippines and China under Annex VII of UNCLOS.

All research and survey activities of foreign countries conducted in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, which have been established in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), without Vietnam’s permission, violate the nation’s sovereign rights and jurisdiction, the spokeswoman stressed.

For the first time, a Vietnamese representative, Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu, was elected the chair of the meeting, marking an important milestone in Vietnam’s engagement in global maritime affairs.

Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu stressed the need to enhance the performance of institutions established under the Convention, thereby reinforcing the role and vitality of UNCLOS, referred to as the “Constitution for the Oceans,” in maintaining maritime order, conserving and sustainably utilising marine resources, and contributing to global peace, stability, and sustainable development.

The Vietnamese representative also emphasised the shared responsibility of relevant parties to build trust, enhance cooperation, and jointly manage the risks of conflict, thus safeguarding long-term peace and stability in the East Sea.
