Vietnam, Japan beef up environmental cooperation

Climate change mitigation and adaptation, marine waste management, environmentally sustainable cities, and air and water pollution are among cooperation areas targeted by Vietnam and Japan in the time ahead.

Hanoi (VNA) – Climate change mitigation and adaptation, marine wastemanagement, environmentally sustainable cities, and air and water pollution areamong cooperation areas targeted by Vietnam and Japan in the time ahead.

VietnameseMinister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha and JapaneseMinister of the Environment Koizumi Shinjiro discussed cooperation betweentheir ministries at an online meeting on August 28. The ministerial-level meetingbetween the two ministries formed part of the sixth Vietnam-Japan EnvironmentalPolicy Dialogue.

Thetwo sides also plan to work together in environmental protection for chemicalactivities, environmental technology, measurement, reporting and verification(MRV), low-carbon technology, bio-diversity preservation, and other issuesregarding environmental protection and improvement.

Inhis remarks, Ha lauded the support in different forms of the Japanese ministryand the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to Vietnam in theprocessing of amending the Law on Environmental Protection.

Hesuggested the two countries adjust cooperation contents in the context of theCOVID-19 pandemic posing challenges for both nations and the world at large.

Theminister urged both sides to step up cooperation in climate change response,natural disaster combat, environmental protection and ocean plastic wastemanagement.

MinisterKoizumi expressed his hope that Vietnam will work with Japan towards the goalof reducing the use of fossil fuels, and in managing, collecting and treatingmarine plastic waste.

 On this occasion, the ministries signed documentextending their bilateral memorandum of understanding on environmentalcooperation, which reiterated the significance of actions aiming to rapidly andsuccessfully implement the Paris agreement and sustainable development goals.

Withinthe framework of the dialogue, the ministries also held a meeting on August 24to review their cooperation and map out orientations for their partnership inthe time ahead./.

Lam Dong steps up efforts to retain UNESCO global geopark status

Covering nearly 4,760 square kilometres across 22 communes and wards in western Lam Dong (equivalent to 73.1% of the former Dak Nong province's natural area), the geopark was shaped by millions of years of geological activity and successive volcanic eruptions.

Rare primate handed over to Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park

A stump-tailed macaque (Macaca arctoides) was handed over to the Centre for Rescue, Conservation, and Development of Creatures under the Management Board of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park in Quang Tri province on July 21, for rehabilitation and eventual release into the wild.

Criminal proceedings launched against case of illegal keeping, trading of 104 wild animals

They recorded a total of 104 wild animals, comprising 92 African spurred tortoises (Geochelone sulcata) of various sizes, six Red Lories (Eos rubra) and six Green-cheeked Parakeets (Pyrrhura molinae). Authorities said the animals are subject to management under Vietnam's forestry legal regulations and are listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Rare wild animals released into natural habitat in Dak Lak

Among them are two species classified under Group IB of Vietnam's protected wildlife list, namely the Bengal slow loris (Nycticebus bengalensis) and the Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica). Both are endangered forest species protected under Vietnamese law and are prohibited from commercial exploitation or use.
