Vietnam joins ASEAN integration conference

A two-day roundtable conference themed “Strengthening regional integration in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) through multi-channel dialogue” opened on Mar. 7 in the Malaysian capital city of Kuala Lumpur .

Eighty experts, officials and scholars from Indonesia , Malaysia , Thailand and Vietnam attended the event. The Vietnamese delegation was led by Director of Institute for Foreign Policy and Strategic Studies, Hoang Anh Tuan.

This is the third in a series of conferences to reinforce and strengthen ASEAN’s role in the context of rapidly changing regional and world situations.

At the conference, delegates focused on discussing major issues, including ASEAN in relation to the development of China and India, the presence of the United States in the region, the challenges in establishing the ASEAN Community and preserving the bloc’s characteristics and values and the driving forces of the cooperation of ASEAN countries. Besides, the issues of disputes on the East Sea also attracted much attention from the delegates.

Within the framework of the two-day conference, Hoang Anh Tuan and President of the diplomatic policy research group of Malaysia , Razali Ismail, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU will create conditions to strengthen research cooperation and exchange experiences between the two countries’ research institutes and scholars, contributing to strengthening Vietnam-Malaysia relations.-VNA
