Vietnam, Laos courts strengthen experience sharing

Chief Judge of the Supreme People’s Court Truong Hoa Binh has expressed hope that the Supreme People’s Courts of Vietnam and Laos will continue to strengthen cooperation and share experience in judgment.

At talks with his Lao counterpart Khamphanh Sitthidampha in Hanoion December 25, Binh noted that the long traditional cooperation betweenthe two court sectors have been consolidated and developed over years.

Mostrecently, a delegation of judges and officials of the Lao SupremePeople’s Court attended a short training course in Vietnam inAugust.

Also in 2012, the Vietnamese government provided 1billion VND for a project to help improve the capacity of the courtsector of Laos.

The two supreme people’s courts areexpected to jointly organise a training course for Lao judges and courtstaff in Laos from January 10-15, 2013 .

Chief Judge ofthe Lao Supreme People’s Court Khamphanh Sitthidampha said he hopes thatthe two courts will continue to exchange delegations and work togetherin training human resources for the Lao side.

After the talks, thedelegation of the Lao Supreme People’s Court, on behalf of the LaoState, presented Laos’ Orders to several individuals and units ofthe Vietnam Supreme People’s Court, including five second-class IssaraOrders, six third-class Issara Orders and two Friendship Orders. -VNA

The court announced that Quyet had submitted a written request to be tried in absentia, citing serious health issues. According to an official statement from Hospital 19/8, the defendant is suffering from multiple illnesses, experiencing fatigue and shortness of breath, with doctors warning of a “very high risk of death.”

Russian scholar with lifelong dedication to Vietnam commemorated

Dr. Kobelev, born in 1938 in Ulyanovsk, was among the first Soviet scholars to specialise in Vietnam. As a former TASS correspondent during the war in Vietnam, he worked closely with Vietnamese institutions and later helped found Russia’s Centre for Vietnamese and ASEAN Studies.

Hanoi court cuts sentences in ‘rescue flight’ bribery case

Among those receiving reduced sentences were Tran Tung, former Deputy Director of the Thai Nguyen provincial Department of Foreign Affairs, whose prison term was cut to 10 years from 12, with six years for accepting bribes and four for abusing power while performing official duties.
