Vietnam, Laos step up collaboration in forestry law enforcement

The Vietnam Administration of Forestry (VNFOREST) and the Lao Department of Forestry Inspection (DOFI) sat down in the central province of Ha Tinh on October 30 to review their cooperation in forestry law enforcement.

Ha Tinh (VNA) – Representatives from the Vietnam Administration ofForestry (VNFOREST) and the Lao Department of Forestry Inspection (DOFI) satdown in the central province of Ha Tinh on October 30 to review theircooperation in forestry law enforcement.

Vietnam and Laos share a borderline spanning 2,340 km alongtheir 10 provinces. The two countries have set up seven international bordergates and six main border gates across the line.

In the past time, the VNFOREST and the DOFI have cooperated atthe central and local levels in forest protection and management, whichcontributed to the reduction of forest fires and legal violations related tologging, timber trade, and wildlife trafficking.

At the function, the sides agreed to intensify measures torealise activities listed in their cooperation memorandum of understanding(MoU).  

They said they will increase exchanging information relatedto policies, regulations, and bilateral negotiation for a voluntary partnershipagreement on forest law enforcement, governance and trade.

They called for continued support from internationalorganisations toward their future collaboration.

Speaking at the meeting, VNFOREST Deputy Director Pham VanDien said Vietnam – Laos joint work in anti-wildlife trafficking and forestrylaw enforcement has been acknowledged by international organisations, creatingfavourable conditions for the sides to access financial and technical funds.

Dien said in the coming time, the VNFOREST and the DOFI willwork with relevant agencies and localities to carry out joint patrols toprotect the environment and ecosystem, and boost sustainable forest managementin response to climate change.

DOFI head Linthong Douangphachanh said the meeting is anoccasion for the sides to exchange forest management experience and discusstheir cooperation in implementing the MoU.

It will last until October 31, after the delegates conduct afield trip to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park in the central province ofQuang Binh.-VNA
