Vietnam leads Southeast Asia in solar power development

After nearly four years of collaboration, Vietnam’s rooftop solar power project in the commercial and industrial sectors has achieved significant milestones. With about 17 GW (gigawatts) of solar power generated since 2020, Vietnam has become a leading country in solar power development in the ASEAN region.

Up to now, more than 100,000 rooftop solar power systems have been installed, making up nearly 50% of Vietnam’s total solar power capacity, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

This marks a key milestone in Vietnam’s efforts to combat climate change, and achieve the target of net-zero emissions by 2050.

Recently issued legal documents, such as the Decree on the mechanism for direct power purchase agreements, and the Decree promoting self-generated and self-consumed rooftop solar power, have established a legal framework to drive the development of the rooftop solar power market.

Under the eighth national power development plan, the total rooftop solar power capacity is expected to increase by 2,600 MW, with at least 50 percent of office buildings and residential homes expected to use self-generated, and self-consumed rooftop solar power by 2030./.
