Vietnam pledges more contributions to UN peacekeeping operations

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamwill contribute more to the United Nations peacekeeping operations, said Deputy Minister of National Defence Sen. Lieut. Gen. NguyenChi Vinh.

Vinh made the promised at aworkshop with the theme of strengthening the role of ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF)member states in enhancing peacekeeping capacity and developing partnershipwith the UN, which is being jointly organised by theVietnam Peacekeeping Centre, and the Embassies of Canada and the Republic ofKorea in Hanoi on December 19-20.

The officer highlighted thesignificance of the event, affirming that Vietnamis working to improve its ability in participating peacekeeping operations withits internal force and support from other countries, especially ARF membernations.

Vietnam wants to propose anumber of initiatives on connecting regional peacekeeping centres, he said,adding that the sharing of experience, and training and equipment assistance hascontributed to improve Vietnam’s ability in the field.

Barbara Nadeau, Charged’affaires of the Canadian Embassy in Vietnam, affirmed ASEAN’s role andinfluence in making security policies in the region, describing the bloc as adynamic centre in the world.

She also underlined theneed to seek more effective measures to deal with existing conflicts in theworld.

Meanwhile, Lee Miyon, Envoy at the Republic of Korea Embassyin Vietnam, stressed the important role played by the UNin solving complicated security issues and extremism facing the world.

At the two-day workshop,participants, including those from 26 ARF member nations, the European Unionand international organizations, are sharing experiences, views and lessons relatedto UN peacekeeping operations as well as measures to promote cooperation andimprove ARF member nations’ capacity in the work.

Two wanted for abusing religious cover to undermine national unity policy

The fugitives are Di (also known as Siu Di), born in 1941, and Dinh Yum (also known as Dinh Jum or Ba Koih), born in 1963, from Ba Na ethnic minority group in Gia Lai province, and hold Vietnamese nationality. They have been charged under Clause 1, Article 116 of the Penal Code for undermining the national unity policy.

Support delivered to Khmer households for traditional New Year

The province's delegation of National Assembly deputies, in coordination with relevant agencies, presented 600 gifts across 11 communes, including 100 in Tap Son commune and 50 in each of the others. The programme, worth 300 million VND (11,300 USD), was funded by Agribank’s Vinh Long branch.
