Vietnam and South Africa should promote economic cooperation in trade and investment, raising two-way trade to impressive figures in the future.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung made this statement on receiving Kgalema Motlanthe, Vice President of South Africa and vice president of the African National Congress (ANC) in Hanoi on October 6.

PM Dung expressed his pleasure at the development of Vietnam-South Africa friendship relations, especially in politics, foreign affairs and economic ties and said that potential for cooperation between the two nations was still very great.

Vietnam and South Africa should cooperate better in international bilateral and multilateral forums, especially the United Nations forum and make strong preparations for the Vietnam-South Africa intergovernmental meeting that is scheduled to open by the end of this year, he said.

Vice President Kgalema Motlanthe said economic cooperation would provide a suitable momentum for cooperative activities in areas where the two countries have strengths, such as environment and education and training.

He also suggested early discussions about signing an agreement to open a direct air route from South Africa to Vietnam, creating favourable conditions for trade and travel.

The same day, at a meeting with Truong Tan Sang, Politburo member and permanent member of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee, Kgalema Motlanthe expressed his desire to promote cooperative ties between the two Parties, increase information exchanges and share leadership experiences.

He said the traditional relationship between the ANC and the Vietnamese Communist Party was a solid foundation to foster bilateral ties.

Truong Tan Sang affirmed that Vietnam wishes to further expand the bilateral cooperative ties, especially economic ties and trade with South Africa. He said he believed the fine relations between the two Parties and countries would achieve new progress for the mutual benefits of the two peoples./.
