Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam supports contents of the globalbiodiversity framework and suggested the need for further research to completeits indicators, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha said at a working session in Hanoi on January 26.

At the meeting, Minister Ha and Ambassador Giorgio Aliberti, head ofthe European Union Delegation to Vietnam, discussed the implementation of theframework and orientations for Vietnam-EU cooperation in implementing Vietnam’scommitments following the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of theParties (COP26).

The minister noted that to carry out the framework, itis necessary to set up implementation measures and resources mobilisationmechanisms; boost collaboration and information exchange; and build capacityfor developing or least developed countries to fulfil related requirements.  

Ha affirmed that Vietnam's commitments at COP26 are veryimportant, serving the country's long-term interests in line with the orientationof the 13th National Party Congress on building a green and circular economy.

Vietnam recommended the EU and its member states pay attentionto cooperation with Vietnam in regard to COP26’s outcomes, the officialsaid. Such joint work should revolve around the implementation of projects on energyand clean transport conversion, conservation, afforestation, and climate changeadaptation.

There is also a need to increase activities serving businesscapacity improvement; guiding the standards for climate change response andsustainable development of goods imported into the European market; anddeveloping the carbon market, among others, he added.

For his part, Aliberti shared the EU's views andexpectations for the framework, and discussed the orientations forCOP26-related cooperation between the bloc and the ministry.

He also talked about a working visit to Vietnam by ExecutiveVice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans, which is scheduledfor February 17-23./.

Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.

U Minh Thuong National Park reopens for tourists as fire risks ease

Hundreds of trees planted in Cuc Phuong National Park as part of Forestival

Renowned artists including Ha Anh Tuan, Den Vau, and Phan Manh Quynh, along with many directors and attendees, took part in planting hundreds of rare tree species such as mun (Diospyros mun) and cho chi (Parashorea chinensis) in the Thung Bong area of the Cuc Phuong National Park, contributing to forest ecosystem restoration.
