(Photo: VietnamPlus) Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam wants to cooperate with countries towards sustainable transport development, Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Thang told the Global Sustainable Transport Forum, which took place in Beijing, China, from September 25-27.
Thang suggested countries step up cooperation in personnel training in the transport sector, as well as in the research, application and transfer of green technologies, infrastructure development, emission reductions, and green energy supply.
Vietnam is one of the countries that has committed to and approved the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Thus, the country has rolled out a national strategy on sustainable development, and adopted a project on major tasks and solutions to implement outcomes of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26). Vietnam also adheres to the national climate change strategy to 2050, and the national plan of action on green growth and methane and carbon emission reduction, the official emphasised.
Apart from prioritising sustainable transport development, Vietnam is also working to accelerate the restructuring of the transport market share towards reducing road transport. It also promotes environmentally-friendly inland waterway and rail transport modes, he said.
Attention has been paid to developing multimodal transport and logistics services based on the application of scientific and technological advances. This move will help in improving the capacity, efficiency, quality of transport services, and reducing logistics costs, the minister continued.
He said Vietnam has been actively materialising programmes and conventions of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) with the goal of joining hands in achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
At the forum, Vietnam suggested countries share experience and initiatives in smart, green transport and low-carbon technology in the sector, and accelerate access to financial and technological resources, opening up many cooperation opportunities towards sustainability.

(Photo: VietnamPlus) Within the framework of the forum, Thang attended a roundtable on building a global sustainable transport partnership. He said Vietnam shares the view of most countries on the need to promote connectivity and joint actions by regions, as well as collaboration in transport.
Vietnam is ready to negotiate, sign and put in place agreements to facilitate both bilateral and multilateral transport cooperation. The aim is to create smooth transport connectivity in service of a stable global logistics supply chain, he affirmed.
Thang called on developed countries to set forth support policies for transport infrastructure in developing nations. He said countries should work together to build international regulations and standards on sustainable global transport and share experience in institution and policy making. Thang also recognized the importance of science and technology utilisation in green energy transition, and greenhouse gas emission reduction, which are challenging for developing nations.
He also suggested cooperation in human resources development, aiming to form a contingent of officials who are able to operate the green, sustainable transport system. They would also be skilled in collaboration in seeking support from international organisations, and official development assistance (ODA) in transport infrastructure development and the implementation of green energy transition programmes and projects in the sector. /.
