Vietnam to phase out ozone-depleting substances

The World Bank has approved a 9.76 million USD non-refundable aid package to help Vietnam phase out Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) - ozone-depleting substances (ODS) instrumental to global warming - for the 2013-15 period.
The World Bank has approved a 9.76 million USD non-refundable aidpackage to help Vietnam phase out Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) -ozone-depleting substances (ODS) instrumental to global warming - forthe 2013-15 period.

The endowment is from the Multilateral Fund for the implementation of the Montreal Protocol on ozone-depleting substances.

The project will apply the latest technologies to phase out 1,275tonnes of HCFCs from foam-producing enterprises, and support policies,regulations and offer technical assistance to reduce HCFC consumption.

The Montreal Protocol requires a gradual declinecommencing in 2013, leading to the complete end of HCFC consumption andproduction by 2030 in developing countries.

The HCFCphase-out in Vietnam also aims to maximise climate-related benefitswith the introduction of zero or low emission alternatives. This is inline with Vietnam’s national policy on industrialisation andmodernisation to meet economic growth and sustainable development goals.

The World Bank, one of the agencies running theMultilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol,has been engaged in ODS phase-out activities in Vietnam since early2000s.-VNA

Centre to apply AI to tropical cyclone forecasting

Hanoi targets 80% of days with good or moderate air quality annually
