Vietnam urges integrating child, women’s rights in policies

The Vietnamese delegation madethe call at discussions on the rights of children and women hosted bythe UN Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs Committee (ThirdCommittee) in New York from October 10-14.

TheUN’s relevant agencies and organisations should strengthen cooperationin protecting child rights as around 8.1 million children under five andover 350,000 newborns die per year while millions of children cannot goto school and are victims of armed conflicts, human trafficking andviolence, it said.

On the occasion, Vietnamintroduced its measures and achievements in caring and protectingchildren through the implementation of the Law on Child Protection, Careand Education and the 2011-2015 National Programme on Child Protection.

Participants at the discussion said that currentchild right protection and supervision mechanisms are yet to effectivelyaddress challenges to the implementation of the rights of girls,disabled, isolated and poor children.

At thecommittee’s discussion on promotion of women’s rights, whileacknowledging achievements made by the UN and its member countries, theVietnamese delegation called for more investment for women to strengthentheir position and participation in social affairs, and the inclusionof the gender issue in national programmes.

Vietnam shared its experience and achievements in ensuring women’srights, including the building of legal frameworks and mechanisms thatfacilitate the equal participation of women in all aspects of life.

At the discussion, the participants emphasised the role of women as“a factor of change” for sustainable development and internationalsecurity.

They spoke highly of progresses inempowering women, the integration of women’s issues in national andinternational agendas and the establishment of the UN Women Agency.

However, they raised concern about the fact that women are stillfacing discriminations and are victims of violence and humantrafficking./.

Foreign policy contributes to propelling Vietnam into new era

2024 saw Vietnam significantly expanding its diplomatic activities with numerous partners and at various important multilateral forums and mechanisms. The country’s key leaders conducted a total of 60 external activities, including paying 21 visits to foreign countries and attend major multilateral conferences, as well as hosting 25 delegations of foreign leaders to Vietnam.
