Seven crewmen with burns, including four Vietnamese, are on their way to the New Zealand city of Christchurch for medical treatment, after their fishing vessel Jeong Woo 2 caught fire in the Ross Sea in New Zealand on Jan. 11.
According to the Vietnamese Embassy in New Zealand, the crewmen were picked up from McMurdo base in the Antarctic by a US Hercules aircraft. The flight was expected to arrive in Christchurch on the evening of Jan. 13.
Vietnamese Ambassador to New Zealand Nguyen Hong Cuong will pay courtesy calls to the victims on Jan. 14.
Also on Jan. 13, the Vietnamese Consular Department under the Foreign Ministry sent records of the victims to the Vietnamese Embassy in New Zealand and asked it to take citizenship protection measures, ensuring the sailors’ legitimate interests and bringing them back home safely./.
