At the gathering, Le Hoang Quan, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, said praised contributions made by overseas Vietnamese to national development and integration, saying they serve a symbolic bridge connecting Vietnam and the world in culture and trade.

He continued, saying HCM City has continuously advanced its policies and devised incentives to encourage overseas Vietnamese expats to return home and work over the last ten years.

In 2014, overseas remittance to the city was over 5 billion USD and 756,000 expats returned through Tan Son Nhat airport alone, Quan said.

The state committee on overseas Vietnamese affairs together with the Foreign Ministry and the municipal People’s Committee organised the event to foster national solidarity.

There are approximately 4.5 million Vietnamese living and working in 103 countries and territories. They form an indispensable part of the nation and play an important role in intensifying cooperation and friendship between Vietnam and the rest of the world.-VNA
