Vietnamese military medical university helps Laos successfully perform 15 kidney transplants

A ceremony was held in Vientiane on August 23 to mark the completion of two-year support in kidney transplantation techniques between the Vietnam Military Medical University (VMMU) and the Military Central Hospital 103 of the Lao People's Army.

Vientiane (VNA) – A ceremony was held in Vientiane on August 23 to mark the completion of two-year support in kidney transplantation techniques between the Vietnam Military Medical University (VMMU) and the Military Central Hospital 103 of the Lao People's Army.

This partnership has resulted in the successful completion of 15 kidney transplants in Laos as of July 2024.

The achievement represents a crucial milestone for Laos, positioning the country on the global map of nations with significant organ transplant accomplishments. This success not only makes public healthcare standards in Laos on par with global and regional levels but also underscores the friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and Laos.

Speaking at the event, VMMU Director Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Xuan Kien expressed his confidence in the development of the Lao military medical sector and the effective support and collaboration between Vietnam's Military Hospital 103, the VMMU, and Laos' Military Central Hospital 103, saying that this partnership will contribute to the enduring friendship and solidarity between the two nations.

Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Gen. Chansamone Chanyalath said the event holds significance in fostering the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the Parties, States, armies and people of Laos and Vietnam.

This collaboration is particularly significant in bolstering national defence-security efforts, as well as advancing the military medical collaboration between the two armies, he said.

On the occasion, the Lao Party, State, and Government awarded the first-, second- and third-class Labour Order to VMMU units and individuals in recognition of their contributions to the kidney transplantation project./.

Vietnam moves toward universal free annual health checkups from 2026

Every Vietnamese citizen from 2026 onward will be entitled to at least one free annual medical checkup or screening. Each individual will also have a digital health record integrated into the national digital identification platform VNeID, enabling authorities and healthcare providers to manage health data in a synchronised and continuous manner.

Under the plan, each resident will be assigned a unique EHR linked to their personal identification number, ensuring accuracy and consistency while minimising duplication and data discrepancies.
