Vietnamese scientist wins world literary prize

Vietnamese American astrophysicist Professor Trinh Xuan Thuan, has been awarded the Cino Del Duca Prize from the Institute of France after his efforts to popularise science to the general public worldwide.
Vietnamese American astrophysicist Professor Trinh Xuan Thuan, has been awarded the Cino Del Duca Prize from the Institute of France after his efforts to popularise science to the general public worldwide.

Thuan will receive his prize, worth 300,000 EUR, at the French Academy on June 6.

Professor Thuan has written numerous books to try and make science accessible to ordinary
people, in addition to his astronomical research, the institute said.

The prize adds to his growing list of awards for his writing, the most recent being
UNESCO’s Kalinga Prize in 2009.

Born in 1948 in Hanoi , Thuan has taught astronomy at the University of Virginia in the US since 1976 and is a Research Associate at the Paris Institute of Astrophysics.

He is an internationally recognised specialist in extragalactic astronomy and renowned for discovering the youngest known galaxy in the universe, as well as being known for writing his books in French.

First established in France in 1969 as an international literary award, the Prix Mondial Cino Del Duca recognises authors whose work, literary or scientific, contributes to humankind./.
