Vietnam’s coconut industry eyes billion-dollar markets

Vietnam’s coconut industry has become a key economic driver for the Mekong Delta and south-central coastal regions, with agreements enabling entry into billion-dollar markets like the US, Europe, and China.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reports that Vietnam cultivates over 200,000 hectares of coconut, ranking sixth globally in production with nearly 2 million tonnes annually.

Coconut exports grew from 180 million USD in 2010 to 900 million USD in 2023 and are expected to surpass 1 billion USD in 2024. Ben Tre Province, the nation’s coconut capital, accounts for 42% of Vietnam's total coconut area and generates 500 million USD in annual export revenue.

China presents a significant opportunity due to high demand and trade advantages. Vietnam’s proximity and large production capacity provide a competitive edge, ensuring a stable supply for this market.

However, experts stress the need for strict management of production and exports to sustain growth. Investment in quality varieties, processing infrastructure, and digital management systems is essential to protect the sector's reputation and maximize value from fresh coconuts and by-products.

With its strong foundation and government support, Vietnam’s coconut industry is well-positioned for global expansion./.
