VN-UN 4th legal policy dialogue highlights gender equality

The Ministry of Justice and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on September 22 opened the fourth legal policy dialogue under the theme of integrating gender issues in law making and execution.

Deputy Minister of Justice Nguyen Thuy Hien and UNDP Country Director Setsuko Yamazaki co-chaired the event.

In opening the dialogue, Deputy Minister Hien said that Vietnam hasreaped great achievements in promoting gender equality and protectingwomen’s rights over the past time, adding that integrating gender issuesinto building and enforcing law is an effective strategy to achievegender equality.

Eamonn Murphy, Acting Head of the UNResident Coordinator Office in Vietnam said the event aims to clarifythe judicial sector’s role in dealing with gender inequality andprotecting women’s right, and help the UN work out contents of itscooperation with Vietnam in promoting gender equality in the next fiveyears.

Deputy Director of the National AssemblyCommittee of Social Affairs, Nguyen Thuy Anh stressed the need tospecify challenges in incorporating gender issues into the building andenforcement of law, especially those come from the perception andawareness of a part of organisations and individuals involved in thework.

She proposed that the government should make areport on the actual implementation of integrating gender issues intolaws that is assigned to compile. On this basis, a project will bedeveloped to improve the quality of incorporating gender issues intolegal documents drafted by relevant agencies./.

Phu Tho: 200kg bomb safely relocated, detonated

According to a report by the Phu Tho Military Command, local residents spotted the bomb on August 31 in the Da River after the river water receded, exposing it beneath mud and soil on the riverbed. The bomb remained intact, including its fuse, and was located about 300m from a residential area.

Shift to data-driven administrative procedures needs acceleration

Under a draft decree replacing Decree 63, authorities will have to proactively pull information from databases and records for informational or technical procedures.
