VN-UN 4th legal policy dialogue highlights gender equality

The Ministry of Justice and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on September 22 opened the fourth legal policy dialogue under the theme of integrating gender issues in law making and execution.

Deputy Minister of Justice Nguyen Thuy Hien and UNDP Country Director Setsuko Yamazaki co-chaired the event.

In opening the dialogue, Deputy Minister Hien said that Vietnam has reaped great achievements in promoting gender equality and protecting women’s rights over the past time, adding that integrating gender issues into building and enforcing law is an effective strategy to achieve gender equality.

Eamonn Murphy, Acting Head of the UN Resident Coordinator Office in Vietnam said the event aims to clarify the judicial sector’s role in dealing with gender inequality and protecting women’s right, and help the UN work out contents of its cooperation with Vietnam in promoting gender equality in the next five years.

Deputy Director of the National Assembly Committee of Social Affairs, Nguyen Thuy Anh stressed the need to specify challenges in incorporating gender issues into the building and enforcement of law, especially those come from the perception and awareness of a part of organisations and individuals involved in the work.

She proposed that the government should make a report on the actual implementation of integrating gender issues into laws that is assigned to compile. On this basis, a project will be developed to improve the quality of incorporating gender issues into legal documents drafted by relevant agencies./.
