A grenade left over from the Vietnam war exploded and took the life of two elementary school students in Thuan An district, Dak Mil district, the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong , on April 16 when they played with it.
The explosion has also seriously injured six others, who are receiving treatment at the Dak Lak general hospital in the neighbouring province of Dak Lak .
T he Dak Nong Military High Command said the children, all from Nguyen Van Troi primary school, played with the shell, believed to be from a US-made M79 grenade launcher, after discovering it on their way home.
Dak Nong’s authorities have visited the victims’ families, and given them sympathy and aid relief.
About 600,000 tonnes of unexploded bombs and mines remain over an area of 66,000 square metres, or 20 percent of Vietnam ’s total land area.
According to statistics, over 100,000 people have been killed or injured by unexploded bombs and mines since 1975.-VNA
