The World Bank (WB) has approved a credit package worth 60 million USD to help Vietnam strengthen its social assistance system by improving management and service delivery nationwide, announced the WB in Vietnam on January 23.
WB Country Director to Vietnam Victoria Kwakwa said that the funding will be used for the Social Assistance System Strengthening Project, which aims to support the Vietnamese Government in poverty reduction through helping children expand their life chances and break the inter-generational transmission of poverty.
Deputy Minister of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Trong Dam said that in Vietnam there are too many fragmented and overlapping social protection programmes and policies.
Therefore, the project will help build a consolidated social assistance system and lay the foundation for a robust social welfare system in the future, thus contributing to sustainable poverty reduction, Dam added.
It will be a great opportunity for Vietnam to build a new modern system that is transparent and efficient in ensuring everyone’s right to access social protection services, he affirmed.
The project, which is jointly conducted by the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UK Department for International Development and the WB, will be piloted in Ha Giang, Quang Nam, Tra Vinh and Lam Dong provinces.-VNA
